A Riot of Thorn and Leaf is a very personal record by Dulcie Matthews of the Silverdale countryside and I commend it to Cumbrians and visitors alike. As well as a comprehensive check list of plants, birds and animals throughout the seasons, this journal is an engaging evocation of Dulcie's home ground and her 'sense of place', written with awareness and love of local wildlife.
